Coroner ID's man killed by Westminster police following altercation

WESTMINSTER, Colo. – A man shot and killed by a Westminster police officer over the weekend has been identified.

According to an Adams County Coroner’s Office report, 27-year-old Birendra Thakuri, of Broomfield, was pronounced deceased at Good Samaritan Medical Center Saturday night.

Police say the unidentified officer shot thakuri during a physical altercation.

According to police, officers with the police department responded to area of Ranch Reserve Parkway and Federal Boulevardon reports that several people were fighting in the roadway just before 9 p.m.

When an officer arrived at the scene, two men advanced on the officer and refused to obey commands, according to Westminster Police Investigator Cheri Spottke.

A physical altercation ensued, and the officer fired his weapon, striking Thakuri. It’s unclear if the second man was injured. Police did not say if any arrests were made.

The officer involved in the shooting was not injured, but was placed on administrative leave per department policy.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
