PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) — A man who entered a last-second guilty plea to allegations that he fatally stabbed another man 61 times at their Colorado home has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that 37-year-old Jeffrey Sylvia was sentenced on Wednesday for first-degree murder after deliberation.

He entered his plea last month just before a trial had been set to begin for the death of 30-year-old Mwalula Bwalya.

Joseph Vandeven with the District Attorney's office said the case was one of the most violent he's seen.

Sylvia and Bwalya lived together with others, including Sylvia's mother who called police. The arrest affidavit says Sylvia told his mother he had stabbed Bwalya because Bwalya had been laughing and teasing him.

Sylvia apologized in court to Bwalya's family and said he regrets his actions.
