RIFLE, Colo. – Three people were arrested Thursday in connection with the death of a 5-year-old child in Rifle, a spokesperson with the city’s police department said in a news release.

Stephanie Alvarado, Bertha Karina Ceballos-Romo and Daniel Bello Alvarado were arrested in connection with the child’s death, Rifle Police Department spokesperson Robin Steffen said.

On Dec. 12, 2019, Rifle police responded to an apartment in the area of Coal Mine Avenue and W. 30th Street on a report of a child in medical distress. While they were on their way, officers were notified the child was already on its way to Grand River Hospital, according to Steffen.

Lifesaving measures were provided at the hospital, but the child died sometime later.

The Garfield Police Department said they are still investigating. The suspects were arrested on the following charges:

All three were charged with child abuse resulting in death, reckless endangerment and possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine. In addition, Ceballos-Romo was charged with tampering with evidence.

The relationship of the three suspects to the 5-year-old was not immediately released by police.
