Mandatory evacuations underway for grass fire around Bear Creek Park near Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Structures are threatened and mandatory evacuations are underway due to a grass fire near Bear Creek Park, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The department said there are reports of grass and brush on fire "with structures threatened." Fire crews are responding and more resources are being requested.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for homes along Electra Drive, Nebula Court, and Orion Drive. New evacuations as of 1 p.m. have been ordered for homes on Gold Camp Road and Bear Creek Drive. All homes west of Vista Grande Drive have also been evacuated.

The department said homes along Electra Drive and Nebula Court have been evacuated as of 12:20 p.m. Cheyenne Mountain High School has been established as a rally point for evacuated residents.

As of 12:15 p.m., all of Bear Creek between Gold Camp & Lower Gold Camp is closed. The Colorado Springs Police Department said North Cheyenne Canyon Park, Bear Creek Park and Red Rock Canyon is closed as of 1:15 p.m.

People are asked to stay away from the area at this time. There is no detail at this time of the size.

News5's Meteorologist Sam Schreier says the winds are alternating from being strong to weak but the biggest gusts have been in the 20 to nearly 30 mph range.
