COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – One man is just unlucky after having his truck stolen in Denver.

Not only did he not have a car for two months, but the thief racked up a traffic violation and left him the bill.

Davis Hammond had his truck stolen in the beginning of March right outside where he worked in Denver.

“I thought maybe I’d forgotten where I parked it,” Hammond said. “So I walked all the way around the block and it finally hit me that my truck had been stolen.”

So what does anyone do in that situation? Hammond filed a police report and it was pretty simple.

About six days later he received a letter from DPD.

“The Denver Police Department contacted me and told me Commerce City recovered my truck,” Hammond said.

Here’s what happened: Hammond’s truck had a lot of damage for the thief, and he didn’t have his truck for two months.

“I just got it back last week,” Hammond said.

But Hammond is just very unlucky, because apparently his car was caught running through a red light.

“I got a notice in the mail that I ran a red light in Commerce City,” Hammond said.

Here’s the problem, it wasn’t Hammond who ran the red light.

Hammond provided Denver7 with the traffic video of his car going through the red light, however it was recorded two days after his car was stolen, and during the timeframe of it being unaccounted for.

Hammond ended up having to send all his documents and police report about the theft to the Commerce City Enforcement Program in Arizona to prove his car was stolen.

“Only thing is, yesterday I got a notice in the mail that I was delinquent,” Hammond said. “It seems I still have to pay even though it wasn’t me.”

After Denver7 contacted Commerce City, a spokesperson said they are aware of Hammond’s situation and will not charge him the fine. Hammond just needs to go to the police department and his fine will be waived.
