COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A Colorado Springs woman began cutting herself in the abdomen after becoming distraught when she accidentally shot her dog on Thanksgiving, police said.

Julie Carbonetti was in a makeshift room in her garage re-assembling a handgun when the firearm discharged, striking the family dog, a press release from the police department states.

The dog was immediately taken an emergency veterinary for care. The dog's condition is unknown at this time.

Carbonetti was also hospitalized but her wounds are non-life threatening, a Colorado Springs police official said.

She was served and released on gun-related charges.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this incident.
