COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A Colorado Springs police officer was injured in a shooting during a traffic stop late Saturday night, police said.

The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident happened shortly before midnight near the intersection of Galley Road and Arrawanna Street, where the officer pulled the suspect over, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The officer approached the vehicle and then walked back to his patrol car, when shots were fired. Officers returned fire, and the suspect drove away, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect was involved in an accident near Pikes Peak Avenue and Dunsmere Street, and then fled on foot. Authorities were still searching for him later Sunday morning.

The sheriff's office was investigating the shooting.
