Carrie McCandless Back In Jail In Larimer County

Former Brighton Charter School Teacher Accused Of Second Probation Violation

The Brighton teacher who made nationwide headlines four years ago when she was convicted of having sex with a 17-year-old male student on a school field trip is back in jail.

Carrie McCandless, 35, was arrested Tuesday in Larimer County on an alleged probation violation. If found guilty, it would be her second probation violation since her 2007 conviction.

Details about this week's arrest were contained in an arrest warrant that said she tested positive for morphine in April.

The Larimer County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman was out of the office Friday and no one else was designated to handle news media inquiries, a receptionist said.

McCandless has a hearing set for May 19 for a possible disposition.

She served a month in jail in 2008 for a probation violation when a probation officer found her in bed at another parolee's apartment, records from the probation department indicated.

McCandless was a teacher at Brighton Charter High School and was married to the school's principal when she had sex with a student while on a field trip to a YMCA camp near Estes Park.

McCandless was fired from her job shortly after the allegations surfaced and has since moved to Georgia.

She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor unlawful sexual contact, as well as felony counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and tampering with physical evidence.

As part of her plea agreement, McCandless agreed to intense supervised probation and ask permission from her probation officer before having sexual contact with others.
