DENVER — At the MaxFund Animal Adoption Center, Carol Bennett dishes out all the love.

"I’m here for them, I’m totally here for these dogs," she said.

The center is a no-kill shelter.

"I see dogs that come in that were relinquished, their hearts are broken," Bennett said. "We want to turn that around for them. We want to show them love and self-worth, that they’re here for no fault of their own."

Bennett is all about second chances. Thirteen years ago, she walked into the no-kill shelter to volunteer and she's been hooked ever since.

"This feels like home to me," Bennett said.

MaxFund Shelter Manager Selina Davison said they will take any dogs that people cannot take care of or any animals that need medical attention.

"We will keep them here for the rest of their lives if need be," she said.

That effort takes a whole lot of compassion and dedication. Every day, Bennett is the calm presence for the shelter pups. She walks them, hosts play groups and most importantly, helps restore their trust in people.

"I want to make their lives here as happy as possible until they do get their forever home, their better forever home," Bennett said.

Volunteer coordinator, Alexa Beale, said Bennett is very caring and loving, especially with the animals.

"She spends so much time here, she spends so much time out of her day," Beale said. "She's retired, so she has the time to be here and it’s really amazing."
