5,000-Acre Wildfire Burning Near Trinidad

Bear Fire Burning On Colo.-N.M. Border

A 5,000-acre wildfire was burning south of Trinidad Monday evening, Las Animas County Sheriff's officials said.

Officials said the fire was sparked by lightning in New Mexico and moved across the border into Colorado Friday.

The residents of four homes in the fire's path were put on standby for possible evacuation.

Three firefighters suffered minor burns, were treated and released.

There were 75 firefighters and one helicopter fighting the fire on the Colorado side of the Bear Fire. Additional resources were being dispatched by the Colorado State Forest Service.

The fire forced the closure of County Road 8.8, also known as Grey Creek Road, KRDO-TV reported. Only emergency vehicles were allowed on that road.
