Free tax return preparation: Where to get your taxes prepared in Colorado

DENVER – The 2018 Tax Filing Season has begun and the deadline to get your return in will be here before you know it.

Why spend some of that money before you even get it in the mail when you can get your taxes prepared for free? We did some research and found these locations offer free tax return preparation for qualifying taxpayers. 

Aurora

1. Denver ABC - Bank of the West has volunteers ready to help you get your tax return in. Services are only provided in English. Appointments not required. You have until April 4 2018 to get your taxes prepared here. 

Location: 10401 East Colfax Ave | Hours: Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

2. Denver ABC – Wells Fargo Aurora is helping residents get some free tax help until April 14. Services are provided in English and English Sign Language. Appointments are not required.

Boulder

1. CU Boulder-VITA is providing free tax return help for Boulder residents until April 7, 2018. Services are provided in English only an walk-ins are welcome. 

Location: CU Boulder, Leeds School of Business, 995 Regent Drive Koelbel Building - Room 375 | Hours: Wed. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Brighton

1. The Adams County Government Center is offering free tax preparation help until April 11. Services are only prepared in English and appointments are not required.

Commerce City

1. Adams City High School is offering free tax return help until March 15 in both English and Spanish inside the library. Walk-ins welcome.

2. Community Choice Credit Union is also offering help for Commerce City residents until April 10, 2018. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Denver

1. African Community Center is providing free tax return help services until March 12, 2018. Services are only provided in English. Appointments are not required. 

Location: 5250 Leetsdale Dr. Suite 200 | Hours: Monday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

2. CU Denver Business School is helping you file your tax returns for free until April 16, 2018. Services are provided only in English and walk-ins are welcome.

Location: 1475 Lawrence Street | Hours: Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. 

3. Denver ABC Valet at Denver Human Services - Castro is proving tax returns services until April 3. Services are provided in both English and Spanish as well as Sign Language. Walk-ins are welcome.

4. Denver ABC at Focus Points has volunteers ready to help you file your tax return. Services are provided both in English and Spanish. Services are being provided until April 4, 2018. Appointments are not required. 

Location: 2501 E 48th Avenue | Hours: Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

5. Denver ABC Supersite at Mi Casa Resource is providing free tax preparation until April 5. Services are provided only in English and appointments are not required.

Location: 345 S. Grove Street | Hours: Mon. and Thur. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

6. Denver ABC at Volunteers of America is providing free tax return help until April 3, 2018. Services are only provided in English. Appointments are not required. 

Location: 2877 Lawrence Street | Hours: Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m 

7. The Montbello Branch Library is providing free tax help from Feb. 10 until April 14, 2018 with services in both English and Spanish. Appointments are not required. 

Location: 12955 Albrook Drive in Denver | Hours: Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

8. Regis University is helping people prepared their tax returns until March 19. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and walk-ins are welcomed.

Location: 3333 Regis Boulevard, Clarke Hall Room 378 – 3rd Floor | Hours: Monday 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

9. THC - Abraham Lincoln High School is helping you prepare your tax returns for free this year until March 17, 2018. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and appointments are not required. 

Location: 2285 S. Federal Boulevard Rm 117 | Hours: Sat. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

10. THC - Community College of Denver is providing free tax return help until March 10, 2018 in both English and Spanish. Appointments are not required. 

Location: 1111 West Colfax Avenue, Cherry Creek Bldg Room 202 | Hours: Wed. 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

11. THC - Metropolitan State University of Denver is also providing free tax return help until April 9, 2018. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Location: 890 Auraria Parkway Room SSB234, Student Success Bldg. | Hours: Mon. and Thurs. from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

12. THC - Big Picture and Career Academy has volunteers at the ready to help you prepare your tax returns this year. They will provide services in both English and Spanish until March 21, 2018. Walk-ins welcome.

Location: 7250 N. Broadway | Hours: Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

13. The University of Denver is not only a place for learning – it’s also a place where you can get free tax return help. Services are offered in English only and an appointment is required. You have from Feb. 9 until April 7, 2018 to get to your taxes prepared at Daniels College.

Fort Lupton

1. THC-AIMS CC at Ft. Lupton is providing free tax return help to Fort Lupton residents until March 2, 2018. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and appointments are not required.

Golden

1. Denver ABC at Jefferson County Human Services is providing free tax help until April 2, 2018. Services are provided only in English and appointments are not required.

Greeley

2. THC - Red Rocks Community College is providing free tax return help until March 17, 2018. You can get help in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Littleton

1. Littleton Life Center is providing free tax return help to those who are ready to get their returns in. Services are provided in both English and Spanish and walk-ins are welcome. You have until April 11, 2018 to get your taxes prepared at this location.

2. The Southwest Regional Council – SW region is providing free help for those looking to get their returns early. An appointment is required and services are provided in English and Spanish. You have until April 16 to get your taxes prepared at this location.

1. Longmont VITA is providing free tax return help in the area until April 14. Services are provided in English and Spanish and walk-ins are welcome.

Loveland

1. RFI-MCNC First United Methodist Church is providing free tax prep. help until April 17. Services are only provided in English. Walk-ins welcome.

2. RFI-MCNC Life Center is also providing free tax return help for Loveland residents. Services are only provided in English and appointments are required.

1. Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce is providing free tax prep services until April 17. Services are only provided in English and appointments are required.

Westminster

1. Adams County Human Services Center is providing free tax return help to residents until April 12, 2018. Services are provided only in English and appointments are not required.

2. THC - Front Range CC, Westminster is helping folks prepare their tax returns for free until March 24, 2018. Services are provided in both English and Spanish. Walk-ins welcome.

Wheat Ridge

1. The Senior’s Resource Center – Aspen is helping folks prepare their tax returns for free until April 13. Services are provided in English and Spanish and you must get an appointment in order to get your taxes prepared.

What is the VITA program? 

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

What you'll need to bring:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents 
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  • Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable.
