DENVER — U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced Monday the winners of the 2018 National Blue Ribbon Awards and five Colorado schools made the list.

The five Colorado schools that received the designation are:

  • Kendrick Lakes Elementary School - Lakewood
  • Swigert International School - Denver
  • Tavelli Elementary School - Fort Collins
  • Willow Creek Elementary School - Centennial
  • Zach Elementary School - Fort Collins

The National Blue Ribbon Award is an annual designation presented to public and private schools throughout the country.

Schools are nominated for the award by the state department of education, and then complete a comprehensive application about school practices.

The award is presented to the schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps.

Only 349 schools nationwide received National Blue Ribbon School honors this year, including the five in Colorado.

The U.S. Department of Education will honor the award-winning schools at a recognition ceremony on November 7 and 8 in Washington, D.C.
