DENVER -- Two schools districts will go before the State Board of Education Thursday with plans to save their districts.

The Montezuma-Cortez School District and the Julesburg School District are two of the 24 districts identified more than five years ago as underperforming. While most districts have improved, five have not.

“All of the school districts and schools are unique and have different reasons why they are struggling with student performance,” said Alyssa Pearson, with the Colorado Department of Education.

There are five options for an underperforming districts or schools:

  • District reorganization
  • School closure
  • Turning a school into a charter
  • Bringing in a management partnership
  • creating partnerships and asking for waivers of certain policies to help them

Thursday, the Board of Education will give the schools its recommendations for improving performance and the districts will share their ideas.

The board says its goal is to make sure students are getting everything they need from their school.
