Johns Hopkins University recently launched an online class that could help you get a new job to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. According to the renowned school’s Coronavirus Resource Center, the new, FREE course is called “Contact Tracing: Resources and Expert Guidance for Tracing the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Contact tracing focuses on how a disease spreads, especially during times of widespread illness and epidemics. Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health created this course to give people the tools and knowledge to help track down the source of localized virus spread.

“Contact tracing is a critically important tool in pandemic response. Public health officials have long used this tactic to break the chain of transmission of infectious diseases and limit the spread of infections,” the course overview says.“The COVID-19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges and will require new approaches to this long-standing public health strategy. Experts at Johns Hopkins University are offering free guidance and resources for successfully implementing both traditional and digital contact tracing, as well as tracking data on the adoption of these efforts in the U.S. and throughout the world.”

The six-hour online course covers a range of topics, including:

  • The basics and natural history of COViD-19, including its presentation, infectious period and transmission mechanics
  • The steps of the contact tracing process, including how to overcome barriers
  • The ethical considerations involved in contact tracing, isolation and quarantine

The course is broken down into individual units with multiple video modules and quizzes to assess your progress.

You will need to enroll for the course through the Coursera platform, but taking the class is free for everyone through December 31.

If you pass all of the assessments and the course, you will receive a certificate that you can add to the Job Skills section of your resume. Many states and local governments arepaying up to $30 an hour for contact tracers to help them identify viral hotspots in their communities, so this might be a good way to get a leg up on the competition!
