DENVER — Get ready for the weekend! Here are seven things to do across the Denver area, while staying safe and socially distant.
• This year’s Global Festival is going virtual! Join Denver7’s Micah Smith as she hosts the online celebration, including performances, a virtual Parade of Nations and a virtual International Fashion Show. It’s all happening on the City of Aurora’s Facebook Page and on AuroraTV.org on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to noon.
• The Arvada Community Garden is celebrating their 53rd year of service to the Arvada community. They will be holding their 25thAnnual Open House on Saturday, Aug. 15 from 11a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Community Garden. The Community Garden has 100+ plots and is operated and maintained by community garden members who enjoy gardening, don’t have a yard or enough room, or just enjoy the social environment. Garden tours will begin at 11 a.m. and then will run about every 30 minutes. There will be lunch, prizes and more! • Two years after losing their home due to raising rent prices, the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys is finally re-opening at their new location in Lakewood on Thursday, Aug. 13. The museum, which was founded in 1981, has a collection of over 20,000 objects that they utilize to stage four major exhibits each year. The exhibits range from vintage Star Wars toys to artisan dollhouses and from antique dolls to well-loved toy soldiers. Objects collected from generations of Coloradans serve as a stepping stone into both art and history. Due to COVID-19, online advance purchase of tickets is required, and the number of people in the gallery at any one time will be restricted. Face masks are also required.
• Every Saturday through Labor Day, enjoy the sounds of local musicians performing live and outside! In select outdoor spaces and patios of your favorite Cherry Creek North stores, a variety of performers from the local music community will serenade you while you shop. Masks are mandatory for people ages 3 and up while inside or waiting in line to enter any indoor or outdoor retail or commercial business. Visitors must give performers 6 feet of distance. • The City of Northglenn is hosting it’s fourth annual Magic Fest this Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Northglenn Recreation Center (all shows will be outside). Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the festival has moved to a pre-purchase ticket event with no more than 30 guests per group. Ticketed shows start at noon and go until 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 per person and each ticket will allow guests to see four magicians doing four different styles of magic and everyone will learn how to do a magic trick!
• Head over to Broomfield for their Summer Saturday Drive-thru! Brought to you by the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities with help from local partners and volunteers, Summer Saturday Drive-thru’s are fun, free community events for families to enjoy art, music and pick up a free goodie bag from the comfort of their car. The final free event is this Saturday, Aug. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Community Park across from the Broomfield Library. This event is limited to the first 500 cars that sign up, so be sure to sign up today!
• Museo of the Americas is pleased to announce that the exhibit La Misión: Hecho de Tierra y Espíritu (The Mission: Made of Earth and Spirit) is officially open. This exhibit explores the artwork produced as a result of the Spanish monarchy sending priests (padres) to convert the indigenous Puebloan residents of the Rio Grande River Valley. Featuring roughly twenty unique pieces of art that date from the 17th Century to the present, La Misión explores the narrative of the peoples living in the Rio Grande River Valley. The exhibit will also feature artwork from Museo’s private collection. The gallery has been made reminiscent of a mission church interior to provide an appropriate space and context for the many Santos, retablos and other artworks in the exhibit.
