When the ESPYs are handed out on Denver7 this Wednesday night, some of the biggest names in sports will take the stage.

But the bigger story may be in those who are not on the stage, including Colorado’s own Jason Horton.

This year, the ESPYs are honoring the legacy of Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver with the Arthur Ashe courage award.  As part of that celebration, Horton and 24 other Special Olympic athletes across the nation have also been given honorary awards for their courage.

Jason Horton has been a Special Olympics Colorado Athlete for four years and competes in flag football, softball, soccer and is a member of the Colorado Rapids Unified Soccer Team.

Jason has fought cancer three different times, in which he lost sight in one of his eyes, his leg and is now deaf. During the first two rounds of cancer treatment, Jason lost both of his parents to cancer.

Due to his last round of cancer treatment (from cancer in his chest), Jason could not finish the season last year with the Colorado Rapids Unified Team.  His teammates honored him throughout the rest of the season by wearing bracelets with his name on them and the hashtag “keep fighting.”

The ESPYs will be broadcast on Denver7, Wednesday, July 12 at 7 p.m.
