DENVER -- The back-to-school displays are out at stores, which means kids will be back in the classroom soon. This year, Denver7 is once again partnering with the Salvation Army and Les Schwab Tires to help provide backpacks full of supplies for about 2,000 students.
But school supplies aren't cheap. We sent a producer out to buy the supplies listed on our Pack-A-Backpack page at three different stores — Target, Walmart and King Soopers. We found the prices only varied by just over a dollar.
King Soopers was the least expensive at a pre-tax price of $20.89 after we applied our club card savings. Target wasn't much more, $21.65, while our total at Walmart was $22.17. We tried to buy identical supplies where possible and tried to make all of our choices the least expensive available.
Of course, none of those prices includes the cost of a backpack. The prices on those vary greatly. However, a donation of just $15 to the Pack-A-Backpack campaign can buy not only all the basic supplies needed for one student, but a backpack as well.
