Making the transition from high school to college is challenging.

It's even harder when you're the first one in your family to do so.

That's where college graduates like Chris Eaton can help.

Eaton volunteers with students at Jefferson High School through Goodwill Denver's Summer Bridge Mentoring Program.  It is designed to help high school graduates transition to college successfully.

One of those students was Jose Ibarra.

“It's a great opportunity for students to get connected with people who already went through that process,” is how Ibarra described the program.

He’s attending college, and says having a mentor like Chris Eaton really made a difference.

“He gave us pointers to go to college and how to get connected and how to be a successful student,” Ibarra said.

For all the help he’s given students, Denver7 and U.S. Bank presented Eaton with a $500 gift card.

Eaton says Goodwill Denver's Summer Bridge Mentoring Program is the perfect place to start for anyone who is looking for a way to give back.

“If there is someone out there that's looking to get involved in the community it's a great place to start.”
