Just where is all of the stimulus money going? One Web site, www.StimulusWatch.org, offers a platform for users to have their say in where the money is spent. The site states that it was built "to help the new administration keep its pledge to invest stimulus money smartly, and to hold public officials to account for the taxpayer money they spend." To achieve this, StimulusWatch.org provides users with information about "shovel-ready" projects -- projects proposed by mayors that are not part of the stimulus bill but that are candidates for federal funding once the bill passes -- in their area. The Web site allows its users to search the prospective projects by type of project, by federal program type or by location. Once a user finds a project of interest, users can then vote on whether or not they think the project is critical, edit the project's description with more details and post a comment about the project.
The projects listed in the database include a description of what the project is, how much it's expected to cost and how many jobs it is expected to create. One example is the building of a convention center hotel in Dallas. According to the Web site, this projected is expected to cost $368 million and would provide 3,800 jobs. So far 314 votes have been cast on StimulusWatch.org, with 2 percent voting that it was a critical project and 98 percent voting no.The Web site is operated by volunteers and is not associated with any group or organization.
