July 4th holiday traffic: Westbound I-70 traffic eases heading into mountains

DENVER - Heading into the mountains for the holiday weekend? You're not alone.

Seems like so many people were thinking of heading into the high country for the Fourth of July weekend that westbound traffic on Interstate 70 had been slow going since about 11 a.m. Thursday before the traffic volume decreased.

Earlier , the Colorado Department of Transportation reported high volume and heavy traffic between Genesee and Idaho Springs, and said that the travel time from C-470 to Idaho Springs was more than an hour.

By 2:30 p.m. the traffic had eased somewhat, CDOT tweeted.  Just after 4 p.m., CDOT tweeted that heavy traffic was easing from Floyd Hill to Idaho Springs.
