SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Denver Broncos shut out the San Francisco 49ers, 34-0, Sunday in their second preseason game and the first NFL game at the new Levi's stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
-- OPENING DRIVE --
The Niners took the opening kick but after two first downs, and a missed field goal, the Broncos defense held back the 49ers. The Broncos' first possession ended with a 26-yard field goal, giving the Broncos 3 points.
The Niners couldn't gain any momentum in their second drive and were forced to punt.
-- FIRST TWO TOUCHDOWNS --
Julius Thomas scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter, giving the Broncos 7 points. The touchdown pass from Peyton Manning was the culmination of a 12-play, 80-yard, 5.5 minute drive.
That drive was the last time Manning played in the game.
The Niners couldn't respond and also missed a 44-yard field goal attempt, keeping them scoreless.
Two possessions later, Broncos' backup quarterback Brock Osweiler led an 11-play, 63-yard drive that ended with C.J. Anderson running in 1 yard for the Broncos' second touchdown of the game, increasing the score to 17-0 just 2 seconds before halftime.
The Broncos had a commanding first half, with only one punt in the four possessions. They also had 194 yards and three third-down conversions.
-- THIRD QUARTER --
After halftime, the Broncos received, but after a scoreless drive, they were forced to punt.
Thanks to an interception from Broncos cornerback Tony Carter, the Broncos' regained possession of the ball and Osweiler threw to wide receiver Cody Latimer, who scored the first touchdown of the third quarter and the third of the game.
Broncos jumped to 24-0.
The Niners' second backup quarterback, Josh Johnson, then tripped over his offensive lineman and fumbled on his first play of the game. Denver recovered and gained possession of the ball putting Zac Dysert, the Broncos' third-string quarterback, in the game.
After two touchdowns and an interception were negated by penalties, Denver sent in the field goal team and Mitch Ewald kicked for the three points.
Denver led 27-0.
-- FOURTH QUARTER --
The Niners fumbled the kickoff in the first drive of the fourth quarter but were able to stop the Broncos on the 1 yard line.
The Broncos couldn't score on the next drive but benefited from another turnover - the 49ers' fourth of the game.
Broncos' linebacker Steven Johnson intercepted a deflected pass and gave the Broncos another chance to score before the end of the game.
On the next drive, Broncos' Dysert threw a touchdown pass to Cameron Morrah, for the Broncos' fourth touchdown of the game.
Score was 34-0.
The 49ers had one last chance to score, and were 4th and goal at the 1-yard line with seconds left in the game. But Broncos' defensive back Jerome Murphy and the Broncos' third string defenders stopped them, preserving the shutout.
This is the Broncos' second preseason game. The Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16, in a penalty-ridden first preseason game on Aug. 7.
Broncos' Lamin Barrow and Gerell Robinson both suffered injuries to their right knee during Sunday's game.
This is the first NFL game at San Francisco's brand new Levi's Stadium. The $1.3 billion stadium is the most expensive NFL stadium yet. It will host Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
