Vandals Strike Arvada Cemetery, Damaging 100 Headstones

Vandals damaged some 100 headstones at the Arvada Cemetery in the 5500 block of Independence Street late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, Arvada police said.

Susan Medina with the Arvada Police Department said according to the investigation, it appeared that the vandals damaged the headstones by turning the pieces over. Some headstones simply fell to the ground without damage, while others were broken.

Empty bottles of alcohol were found in the area where the vandalism took place, police said.

The Arvada Cemetery has been in existence since 1863. One of the damaged headstones belonged to a member of the Wadsworth family, a prominent family in Arvada's history.

Medina said the damage was estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

No suspects have been identified. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Arvada Police Department at 720-898-6900.
