A Florida prisoner who escaped after allegedly stabbing a detective with his eyeglasses has been shot and killed by law enforcement officers near Dallas following a home burglary.

Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling says Alberto Morales was shot Saturday just after midnight when police chased him in a wooded area. Authorities searched for him after getting a report that jewelry and clothing had been stolen in a home burglary.

Eberling declined to release further information about what might have sparked the shooting. He says it's under investigation.

The 42-year-old Morales was a convicted sex offender who escaped Monday at a Wal-Mart store parking lot in Grapevine. Police say he used a sharp piece from his eyeglasses to stab a Miami-Dade detective who was transferring him by car to Nevada.
