Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch evacuated as fire burns in Huerfano County

WALSENBURG, Colo. - The Spanish Peaks Boy Scout Ranch in Huerfano County was evacuated Wednesday after a 50-acre fire erupted nearby.

The fire was burning near the East Spanish Peak.

The East Peak Fire was reported at 60 acres with zero containment, according to the Huerfano Office of Emergency Management. Flames were reported to be 150- to 200-feet high.  Evacuations have also been ordered for county roads 320, 310, 317.1, 317, 312, 314, 313, 315.1, 315, 316, 332, 331, 310.2.

There was also a voluntary evacuation for the Black Hawk Ranch area in Huerfano and Las Animas counties.

The Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg was set up as an evacuation center.  

The American Red Cross also opened a shelter at Walsenburg High School, 355 W. Pine, to shelter people evacuated from the Scout Ranch Fire.  More than 100 people  arrived at the shelter, which is being staffed by a Red Cross mass care team.
