CASTLE ROCK, Colo. - A Castle Rock police officer responding to a home burglary fired on a suspect vehicle that swerved at officers on Thursday afternoon, police said.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. in the 500 block of Mango Drive.
Police Chief Jack Cauley said a woman called 911 to report suspicious men outside a neighbor's house. The caller said she'd heard a noise and was concerned the men had broken into the house.
Five officers responded to the scene and spotted a blue Ford Explorer outside the home, said police spokeswoman Karen McGrath.
A man at the wheel of the SUV took off, "swerving aggressively toward" officers on foot and in a nearby patrol car, McGrath said.
Fearing for his safety, an officer on foot fired on the SUV, striking a rear window, Cauley said.
The SUV kept driving a couple blocks, then veered onto a snow-covered roadside. Police arrested the driver.
Meanwhile, two other men ran from the burglarized home and were eventually found and arrested, McGrath said.
As a precaution, police issued a telephone alert telling residents and businesses within a 3/4-mile area that police were looking for a possible fourth suspect. Nearby Daniel C. Oakes High School was placed on lockdown.
Police determined there wasn't a fourth suspect and believe all those involved are in custody.
No one was injured in the incident.
The investigation into the shooting and the burglary is ongoing. No suspect names have been released.
