CENTENNIAL, Colo. - The father of a woman killed in the Aurora theater shooting shouted, "Rot in hell Holmes," at accused killer James Holmes during a Friday morning hearing in Arapahoe County court.
Steve Hernandez, father of Rebecca Wingo, yelled from the public gallery at Holmes as Arapahoe County District Judge William B. Sylvester was swinging his gavel to end a hearing. The judge had agreed to delay until March 12 Holmes' arraignment on 166 counts, mostly first-degree murder and attempted murder charges, in the Century 16 shooting rampage.
The court reconvened a few minutes later to address the outburst.
The judge asked Hernandez who he was and if he was murdered victim Rebecca Wingo's father. Hernandez confirmed that he was.
"I'm terribly sorry for your loss and I can only begin to imagine the emotions that are raging," Sylvester said.
The judge continued, reminding Hernandez and everyone in the courtroom that there is a decorum order associated with the case.
"I understand, and I meant no disrespect to you or the courts," Hernandez said.
Sylvester asked, "Can I count on you from now on to make no more outbursts?"
"I can promise you no more outbursts," he responded.
The judge also told Hernandez that there were other rooms from which to watch the court proceedings if he could not control his outbursts.
The father has long made clear his anger at the senseless killing of his child.
The day after the July 20 shooting, Hernandez wrote on Facebook: "I lost my daughter yesterday to a mad man, my grief right now is inconsolable. I hear she died instantly, without pain, however the pain is unbearable, Lord why, why, why?"
