Nathan Dunlap moves closer to execution

DENVER - A judge has set a hearing to narrow down when Nathan Dunlap could be executed for killing four people at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in 1993.

The Denver Post reports (http://bit.ly/12T3nwL ) a judge has scheduled a hearing May 1 to designate the week of execution. By state law, the designated week must be between 91 and 126 days of the hearing at which the week is chosen. The head of the state Department of Corrections would set the final execution date.

The U.S. Supreme Court in February declined to hear Dunlap's death penalty appeal, clearing the way to set an execution date.

Records show Dunlap's attorneys have been in contact with the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper, who could grant Dunlap clemency.

Colorado last executed someone in 1997.
