Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity

PUEBLO, Colo. - Accused Aurora theater shooter James Holmes has arrived at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo for psychiatric evaluations, the Pueblo Chieftain reported Tuesday.
The Chieftain reported Holmes arrived at the hospital early Monday. He will be in a ward by himself under very tight security, said Nick Bonham, a Chieftain reporter.
The results of the psychiatric evaluation are key to Holmes' defense of not guilty by reason of insanity.
In June, the superintendent of the state hospital asked the Arapahoe District Court to extend the deadline of Holmes' psychiatric evaluation. The evaluation was supposed to be completed by July 31.
The judge agreed to extend the evaluation until mid-September.
It is unclear how long Holmes will be at the hospital.
Last month, Holmes' attorneys acknowledged that Holmes opened fire in the movie theater on July 20, 2012, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others. Now they're hoping to prove that Holmes was insane when he did it.
