LAKEWOOD, Colo. - A teenage jogger died Sunday morning after a hit and run in Lakewood Saturday night, and the driver may have been street racing.
The Colorado State Patrol said Gerard "Gerry" Julien, 15, was hit near the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Asbury Avenue, just south of West Jewell Avenue, just before 10 p.m.
Julien died early Sunday morning at St. Anthony's Central Hospital. Julien wanted to be a Navy SEAL and was attending the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, "becoming a man," according to his father. He was staying with his family in Lakewood over Summer break and jogging Saturday night as part of his regimen to train for the academy, his father said.
"This is tough," Julien's father told 7NEWS and then asked for privacy as he and the family deal with the tragedy.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two cars racing in the area at the time of the crash. Julien was hit as he was crossing Kipling Parkway, according to investigators and the vehicle that hit him may have run a red light.
The State Patrol had been looking for a red or orange Chrysler PT Cruiser and a black sedan after the crash.
The suspect in the teen's death is an adult male, but investigators say they want to thoroughly investigate before they release his name or make an arrest.
"We want people to know that because of tips, we found two of the three things we were looking for," said Trooper Heather Cobler. "We are still looking for the driver of the black sedan."
Cobler said investigators don't know if the black car was a participant in the street racing or just a witness. They are still asking for help in identifying the vehicle.
Authorities received several calls about the same PT Cruiser from people who saw the story on the news and noticed changes on the vehicle. One of those calls came from a family member of the suspect.
She said investigators don't know if the black car was a participant in the street racing or just a witness. They are still asking for help in identifying the vehicle.
If you have any information about this crash, or can help in identifying the vehicles that left the scene, please contact the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501.
