COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A 30-year-old Fort Carson soldier has been arrested on 12 counts of child sexual assault and police as far away as Hawaii are searching for additional victims.
Colorado Springs police arrested Army Spc. Joe Alfred Garcia Jr. on Oct. 2 after U.S. Homeland Security investigators in Boston sought their assistance on a child pornography case.
Colorado Springs immediately began investigating whether crimes had been committed in Colorado. They arrested Garcia that night on a dozen felony counts of child sexual assault by a person in a position of trust involving a pattern, said police spokeswoman Barbara Miller.
The charges state the first victim identified is under age 15. Police have identified at least three other child victims, Miller said.
Based on what the investigation has uncovered and concerns about the potential for additional victims in other states, Colorado Springs police have launched a joint investigation with the Army Criminal Investigation Division, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and Hawaiian authorities.
Public records show Garcia has also lived in Hawaii and California.
Police are also asking for the public's help on the case.
Anyone who has information about Garcia is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000. You can also provide anonymous tips to Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers at 719-634-7867. Tipsters can earn a cash reward.
