DENVER - The grand opening of the first FasTracks light rail line is this Friday and RTD is giving passengers a free ride.
The 12.1-mile West Rail Line (W Line) starts at Denver's Union Station, travels through parts of Denver, Lakewood and stops at the Jefferson County Government Center in Golden.
Governor John Hickenlooper is expected to attend the grand opening ceremony at the Jefferson County Government Center/Golden Station on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Following the ceremony there will be entertainment, refreshments and free rides on the W Line.
Parties will also take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at many of the stations along the W line Saturday.
The entire RTD light rail system will be free to the public all day Saturday.

The W Line will run every five minutes along most of the line during peak hours. It is expected to serve an estimated 19,300 riders each weekday.
The $4.2 billion FasTracks project will add 50 miles of new light rail line. The project includes an East Line to Denver International Airport; Gold Line to Arvada; Northwest Rail Line to south Westminster and North Metro Rail Line to the National Western Stock Show.
