Friends of shooting victim say he was trying to break-up a fight when killed

Victim of shooting identified as Chris Haney, 36

DENVER - Friends of Chris Haney, 36, said he was trying to break-up a fight when he was shot and killed outside a Denny's restaurant early Saturday morning. Denver police arrested a juvenile and a man in connection with the shooting.

Saturday night, Denver police tweeted that they had two suspects in custody: Robert Bernal, 25, and a juvenile. A woman who identified herself as Bernal's mother told 7NEWS the juvenile suspect is Bernal's brother.

Denver Police said it started with fight inside the Denny's at 900 West Alameda Avenue and spilled outside to the parking lot at about 3 a.m.

The victim of the shooting was identified as Chris Haney, 36, who worked as a bartender at the Gothic Theater. Haney died at the hospital. He is the father of a 5-year-old girl.

The assistant general manager at the Gothic Theater had known Haney for 18 years.

“He was not just my best friend but a great friend to so many in this city, and if you have somebody out there who you love and care about, man hold them close to you tonight.  Thank your lucky stars every day for the people who make this a wonderful place because they may not always be there,” Kent Shelton told 7NEWS.

Shelton called Haney “a big hearted, warm, very funny and generous individual.”

“It will be a poorer town without him in it,” Shelton said.

Haney had been at a concert at Hi-Dive with his friends before the shooting, his friends said. He was walking home when he saw the fight happening.

"I think he got in the middle of a situation that was bigger than he expected it to be. Wrong place, wrong time," Shelton said.

Haney's wife and daughter were on a vacation to Disney World when the shooting happened.
