DENVER - A Denver father is angry after his 11-year-old son's school bus arrived more than an hour late after school -- with no notification of parents -- on Tuesday afternoon.
Mike Lopez told 7NEWS school officials should have notified him and other parents of the lengthy delay.
As a single parent, Lopez said he worried about his son's well-being.
"I was really freaking out about it. I didn't know where my kid was at," said the father, whose son, Jacob, attends Grant Beacon Middle School.
Lopez said Jacob's bus was supposed to drop his son off about 4:15 p.m. at South Raritan Street and West Louisiana Avenue. Instead, it showed up closer to 5:30 p.m., the father said.
Denver Public Schools spokeswoman Kristy Armstrong said school officials did offer the students an opportunity to call their parents. Yet, a frustrated Lopez said he made several attempts to reach the district's transportation department, but was never able to get an answer.
"I think the school should have at least notified the parents by phone to tell us know the bus broke down," said Lopez.
The school district doesn't have a formal notification policy for cases like this.
Denver Public Schools issued this apologetic statement:
"Due to a bus mechanical issue this afternoon, there was a delay in transporting students from Grant Beacon Middle School to their stops. During the time of the delay all of the students remained inside the school under adult supervision. Once the mechanical issue was fixed, students were safely transported from the school to their drop-off locations. Communication with our families about their children is a priority for us. We apologize to our families for our failure to communicate about this delay in a timely fashion.
Mike Lopez wants the district to take action beyond an apology.
"I want them to own up to it and change a policy or something to where they're going to call parents and let them know if their child is going to be an hour late," Lopez said.
