Delay removing Colorado pikeminnow fish from endangered list

DENVER - Officials who had hoped to begin the process to remove the Colorado pikeminnow from the list of endangered species are putting off their efforts until 2018.

The Colorado pikeminnow is one of four endangered fish species in the Colorado River.

Colorado pikeminnow, once known as squawfish, are now most common in the Green and Yampa rivers, though the 15-mile stretch of the Colorado River through the Grand Valley is considered critical to survival of the fish.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the pikeminnow population in the Green River has fluctuated between 2,200 and 4,500 and most recently has been on the increase, said Chart, a fisheries biologist, but problems persist on the Yampa River.
