27 animals found in 800-square-foot apartment, 4 people charged with animal cruelty

DENVER - Four people are charged with animal cruelty after Denver Animal Control officers found more than two dozen animals in a single apartment.

The 27 animals were discovered in an 800-square-foot apartment in southeast Denver last week.

Monday, prosecutors charged Ken Rumery, Linda Rumery, Karla Rumery and Ian Nelson with animal cruelty, a misdemeanor.

They are scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on November 1.

Prosecutors said animal control officers rescued 22 dogs, one cat, two turtles and two hamsters. They also removed one dead puppy and three dead frogs.

The surviving animals are being cared for at the Denver Animal Shelter at 1241 W. Bayaud Avenue in Denver.
