2 bodies found near Mount Evans, where Minnesota father & son, Damian and Evan McManus, disappeared

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. - Two bodies were found in the Mount Evans area Thursday where a Minnesota father and son went missing while hiking in April.

Hikers came across the remains about 10 a.m. in the area of Mount Evans, the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Sheriff's officials didn't release any information about the bodies or whether they could be Damian McManus, 51, and his 18-year-old son, Evan McManus, of St. Louis Park, Minn.

The bodies were being recovered by Alpine and Rocky Mountain Rescue. The bodies were going to be turned over the County Coroner’s Office for identification, sheriff's officials said.

Damian and Evan McManus were last heard from on April 2 as they headed on a hiking trip at Echo Lake, authorities said.

Evan McManus had told his girlfriend, "We're going to scale a peak." But, he didn't say what peak, a search official said.

The pair was reported missing on April 6 after they didn't return from the camping trip.

Their snow-covered car, a maroon Ford Edge, was found in the Echo Lake parking lot. Searchers found a receipt in the Ford showing the pair had breakfast at Denny's in Lakewood on the morning of April 2.

The search was hampered -- and made hazardous -- by about 3 feet of snow that fell in the days after the McManuses disappeared.

More than 50 members of over a dozen Colorado search and rescue teams searched extensively for the men on skis, snowmobiles and from the air.

After four days, authorities called off the search. Officials said the father and son were presumed dead.

The bodies were discovered Thursday as four Minnesota firefighters were searching the Mount Evans area for the McManuses. The firefighters from St. Louis Park, Edina and Eden Prairie, had volunteered to go to Colorado in a last push to find the missing father and son.

It's unclear if the firefighters were aware the remains had been found.

On Thursday afternoon, KSTP-TV, the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis reported that the Minnesota firefighters had been searching since Tuesday and were thinking of staying for another day.

News of the discovery is drawing attention on the Facebook page, "Missing: Damian and Evan McManus," where people share information about the search for the missing men.

"There was just a story on the news that 2 bodies have been found on Mt. Evans, is this true?" a woman posted. "Do we think it might be them? Are they finally coming home?!?"

"I pray for closure for this family," another woman wrote.
