Police: shooting 'unintended'

LONGMONT, Colo. - An 18-year-old Niwot woman was fatally shot on accident Friday night in Longmont.

Longmont police identified the victim as Premila Lal.

Officers were called to 2500 block of Cambridge Dr. around 8:04 in the evening, and learned that the shooting happened at the home, after talking with neighbors.

Police said they have identified the shooter and that witnesses are cooperating with the investigation, according to Longmont police. Police characterized the shooting as "unintended and extremely tragic."

Lal was brought to Longmont United Hospital by relatives and died about an hour later. The hospital is about one mile from the home where the shooting happened.

The four people involved, including the victim, were all friends or relatives ranging from ages 12 to 21, police said. 

Police took a 21-year-old man into custody in connection with the shooting. Nerrek D. Galley was held on suspicion of giving a gun to a minor, child abuse and reckless endangerment.

Longmont police spokesman Jeff Satur confirmed that Galley was being held at Boulder Jail without bond, even though the shooting was an accident..

"Premila was hiding in the closet and jumped out at Galley before being shot," he said. "This is a terrible tragedy."

Officers do not believe that gangs, alcohol or drugs played a factor in the shooting.
