LONGMONT, Colo. - A multi-family structure in Longmont was sealed off briefly Monday afternoon as police investigated the death of 6-year-old girl from possible illness.

The Boulder County Coroner identified the child as Lluvia Espinoza Morales. The cause and manner of her death are being investigated, the coroner said.

Investigators took the precaution of wearing hazmat gear before entering a unit in the four-plex, located at 706 Darby Court. They believe the girl died of the flu and wore the gear to avoid getting sick themselves, said Longmont police Commander Tim Lewis.

Jeff Satur, spokesman for the Longmont Police Department, said the 6-year-old girl was taken to Longmont United Hospital by family around 8:30 a.m. He also confirmed that the investigators at the apartment were wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.

There are no other known victims, Satur said.

Officers also took the precaution of blocking the street. However, by 5 p.m. hazmat and police detectives had cleared the scene.

"We do not believe there is any danger to the community," Satur said.

Lewis said this flu season has been terrible and if this flu strand possibly killed a girl, officers didn't want to take the risk of bringing it back to their own families.

The CDC currently lists Colorado as having moderate flu activity. So far this season, the deaths of five Colorado children are being blamed on the virus.
