FORT MORGAN, Colo. - A grand jury has indicted the boyfriend of a missing Fort Morgan teen for perjured testimony, tampering with evidence and attempting to influence a public servant.
A prosecutor said Ivan Torralba, 18, is accused of giving false testimony to the grand jury on Nov. 6 and evidence tampering in the investigation about 17-year-old Kayla Chadwick's disappearance. But he's not charged with committing a crime against Chadwick.
"These charges stem from his behavior and conduct with regard to the investigation itself," said Brittny Lewton, district attorney-elect for the 13th Judicial District, which includes Morgan County, where Chadwick vanished on the night of March 27.
But the charges don't "pertain directly to a crime against Kayla," Lewton added.
Police have said that Chadwick disappeared on the night she had an argument with Torralba. The two were senior classmates at Fort Morgan High School.
Chadwick was last seen in the 19500 block of County Road R.7, police said.
Torralba is now charged with four counts of perjury while testifying to the grand jury, along with a count each of evidence tampering and attempting to influence a public servant.
He was arrested Nov. 8 and remains in the Logan County Detention Center on $250,000 bond.
Lewton said she couldn't discuss details about the charges against Torralba, including what evidence he's accused of tampering with, because the underlying details of the indictment have been sealed by a judge.
She stressed that investigators need to protect the ongoing investigation.
Asked if she believes Chadwick is still alive, the prosecutor said: "I sure hope so. I don't have any idea one way or the other."
Dozens of community members have joined search parties for the missing team. And Fort Morgan police, Morgan County sheriff's investigators and the FBI are working on the case.
But since Chadwick vanished that night, no one has seen or heard from her, family members say.
Chadwick is described 5-feet 5-inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. She has long, red hair with black tips. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a plaid shirt covering a black lace spaghetti-strap shirt and black shoes.
