Aurora victim fund manager to head marathon fund

BOSTON - Kenneth Feinberg, an attorney who managed the Aurora Victim Relief Fund and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, will design and administrator of a new fund to help people affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino say the One Fund Boston is intended as a central place to gather donations for bombing victims.

Feinberg is a nationally-recognized expert in handling relief funds created after other various tragedies and disasters and is best known for serving as the Special Master of the Federal September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001. In that role he reached out to all who qualified to file a claim, evaluated applications, determined appropriate compensation and disseminated awards.

Patrick and Menino said that by 5 p.m. Wednesday the fund had more than $7 million in commitments from corporate and individual donors, and more than $500,000 in online donations from 8,500 people.
