Ask those who do it, and they will tell you there is nothing like skiing Colorado’s legendary backcountry.

"It's this most amazing feeling, with gravity just flowing downhill, and flowing around you, and under your feet, and how it feels," said Krista Hildebrandt.

But there are dangers out there, which lead many people to sign up for avalanche safety courses, like the AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Certification course.

"We are here ready to provide them with the information when they're ready to hear it....and those are the best students," said Hildebrandt, an instructor with Irwin Guides.

Every day of the 3-day course starts off in the classroom learning the science behind snow and avalanches. Then, it’s outside to do search and rescue drills, liking finding buried beacons.

They say it’s not just about having the right gear or even knowing how to use it. It’s being able to identify problems that exist when you’re out in the backcountry.
