If you are looking for a hike that ends with amazing 360 degree views, and even some history, then consider one of the most popular hiking trails along the Front Range.

This trail takes families to the last manned fire outlook in Colorado, called Devil's Head.

"This is my 3rd time up Devil’s Head. You get up there and you can see forever. You can see for miles and miles -- it's beautiful," said Molly Lintz.

The hike is less than two miles so it draws families. While the kids may be able to run up at times, the hike can be challenging for most.

To see the view, you will have to hike a trail with a 950-foot elevation gain. At the end of the hike, you will then climb 143 stairs to the top of the lookout tower.

At the top of the lookout, you might just run into Bill Ellis. He's been manning the fire outlook off and on for 22 summers.
Bill Ellis watches the area for any fires from the Devils Head fire outlook tower.

"The main thing is to look for smoke, that's the reason we are here. Next thing is the tourist, it's a good public relations center. You figure 10,000 to 15,000 people a summer. You're exposed to a lot of people," said Ellis.

Every few minutes, Bill takes a break from talking to the kids and showing off his popular fly collection to bring out the big binoculars.

"It's quiet competitive, you've got everybody who lives in the forest looking for fires, everybody who works for the forest service looking for fires," says Ellis.

Bill spotted over a dozen fires this past summer.

While Bill looks at the view for work, others work to get to the view.

By the way, if you make it to the top and Bill is there, you might just get a card that certifies you climbed Devil's Head Lookout Station, guarding the Pike National Forest against fire.

You will then be recognized as a member of the ancient and honorable order of squirrels.
