Not all of the beauty and magesty in Colorado is found in the mountains and high places. If you look around, there's some tranquil and pretty places on the eastern plains. One such place is the Pawnee National Grasslands, just 25 miles northeast of Greeley in Weld County. The grasslands are a great place for a family camping trip, or just a day drive.
The Pawnee Buttes, located within the grasslands, are two area landmarks that rise 300 feet above the surrounding terrain. They were nicknamed the “Rattlesnake Buttes” in James Michener’s novel, “Centennial.”While tempting, you cannot climb the buttes.
