Hurricane Stan

October 1-5, 2005

UPDATED: 1:34 am MST November 30, 2005

An area of disturbed weather over the western Caribbean in late September gave way to a tropical depression to start the month of October. Just before making a landfall 40 miles south of Tulum, Mexico, on October 2nd...the system developed into Tropical Storm Stan.

Stan crossed the Yucatan, weakening into a depression, but regained storm status over the Bay of Campeche on October 3rd.

After making a southwest turn, Stan began heading toward the Mexican coastline while picking up steam. Winds topped out at 80 MPH late on the 4th before the system made landfall 90 miles south of Veracruz.

Hurricane Stan helped trigger torrential rains over portions of Mexico and Central America. There were 652 deaths in Guatamala and 133 in Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica.
