A potent tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa on August 27th became a tropical depression on September 1st, about 1100 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. It became Tropical Storm Maria on September 2nd.

Maria churned about the Atlantic becoming a hurricane on the 4th, then weakening to a tropical storm on the, and regaining hurricane status on the 7th.

By the 10th the system had converted into a powerful extratropical storm over the North Atlantic, located 730 miles east-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. The storm caused one death and a landslide in Norway.
