Tropical Storm Franklin

July 21-29, 2005

POSTED: 1:50 pm MST November 20, 2005
UPDATED: 1:48 am MST November 30, 2005

Tropical Storm Franklin gave the weary residents of Florida a scare after rapidly firing into a tropical storm on July 21st, having just been named a depression earlier that day. Franklin was located near the central Bahamas.

Over the next few days, the system crept to the north and slowly made a northeast turn over the next few days. It strengthened to a maximum intensity of 70 MPH on July 23rd while erratically moving off in an east-northeast fashion, toward Bermuda.

Strong northwest wind shear weakened Franklin down to 40 MPH by the 25th, while passing Bermuda nearly 200 miles to the west.

On July 26th the storm strengthen back to 60 MPH on a northward track, and once again weakened to an extra-tropical weather system late on July29th. The storm merged with a frontal zone and dissipated.
