UPDATED: 1:43 am MST November 30, 2005

The first tropical depression of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season formed on June 8, 2005, near the coast of Honduras. It became Tropical Storm Arlene on the 9th, centered about 170 miles WSW of Grand Cayman.

The storm made a northward crawl with steady intensification, making a landfall over western Cuba near Cabo Corrientes. Maximum sustained winds were 50 MPH.

Arlene pressed northward, almost reaching hurricane status over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 70 MPH. The storm weakened to 60 MPH before making a landfall just west of Pensacola, Florida, at approximately 2:30 PM on Saturday, June 11.

Arlene caused minimal damage, but did claim one life near Miami Beach, Florida, due to rip currents.

One F0 rated tornado was attributed to Arlene near Navarre Beach. No damage was reported.

This storm did produce rains of 3 to 6" across much of the area, with some of the heaviest totals falling in and around Mobile, Alabama.

The system weakened over land and was absorbed by a cold front over southeast Canada on June 14th.
