DENVER -- The worst is over for the Denver area as our storm moves north and east of the state. As it continues on this path, conditions will improve in the foothills and across the metro area, but will worsen on the far eastern plains.

A BLIZZARD WARNING has been issued for the plains and is in effect until 6 a.m. Friday morning. The BLIZZARD WARNING includes cities like Fort Morgan, Limon, Briggsdale, Wiggins, Bennett, Byers, and Agate.

Six to 12 inches of snow will be possible in these spots, with winds gusting over 40 mph. A number of roads on the eastern plains have been closed due to adverse driving conditions. Check with CDOT before making any travel plans and avoid driving on the northeastern plains if you can.

The state's steady, two-day storm has brought more than 3 feet of snow to the foothills and close to 2 feet in many metro area locations west of Interstate 25. The good news is it started to dissipate by the afternoon and was gone by evening.

A WINTER STORM WARNING that covered much of Colorado expired at 6 p.m. Thursday. Any additional accumulations will be light.

Those who braved the morning commute Thursday saw snowpacked and icy roads. The snowplows have tried to stay on top of it overnight, but the snow started to pick up again in the morning and remained heavy through the morning hours.

The snow was off and on Thursday, ending Thursday evening for most of the metro area. By the time the storm moved out, accumulations were in the 10 to 24 inch range for the many cities. Why was the storm so steady and went on for so long? The low pressure system that developed over the Four Corners region took its sweet time progressing through the region. It eventually moved northeast of the state, and will spread rain and snow to the upper midwest and into the middle of the country on Friday.

Weekend Will Be Dry

The storm system will be out by the weekend, with mostly clear skies on Saturday and Sunday.

By Halloween, the weather will be dry and milder. Temperatures on Saturday will warm into the low 50s, under mostly sunny skies. Expect temperatures in the 30s and 40s for your trick-or-treaters with snow still be on the ground.
