DENVER -- It's official, the 2009-2010 Colorado ski season is underway!Loveland Ski Area began making snow on Monday, Sept. 21 -- the last full day of summer.Loveland's inaugural snowmaking day coincided with Mother Nature's plan to bring natural snow to the high country, as well as to metro Denver. Snow was reported in Elizabeth, Aurora, and southwestern Weld County.
By Monday evening, the resort had received light snow accumulations.Loveland was scheduled to begin processing artificial snow by the middle of the week, which would have been on target with the 2008-2009 season, when the resort began making snow on Sept. 24, 2008.According to Loveland snowmaker Sean Stauffer, the early start is due to ideal conditions. The weather during the past few days has been cool and dry.The start of the Colorado ski season is typically a race between Arapahoe Basin and Loveland, and when asked for predictions for when Loveland might open, Stauffer said, "It'll be a surprise."Let the race begin.
