From Summer To Winter

Snow On The Last Day of Summer!

POSTED: 6:12 am MDT September 21, 2009
UPDATED: 6:53 pm MDT September 21, 2009

Fall officially starts on Tuesday at 3:19 PM, but Mother Nature got a jump start on Winter today! A strong cold front roared into Colorado early this morning and brought an aburpt end to the lovely sumer weather we enjoyed over the weekend. Temperatures took a dive from the 80s to the upper 30s over the Metro area and rain was mixed with snow. In the mountains and foothills, wet snow has fallen for much of the day, with a couple of inches piling up, before melting down to a nice thin blanket.

Overnight, the lows will drop into the mid 30s over the Urban Corridor, so you may want to put a blanket on those tomato plants - both the plants and you will rest easier!

The wet and chilly weather will be sticking around for a few days. We are forecasting something called a cut-off low to be centered over southeast Colorado for the next 72 hours. This type system will bring a generally north-northeast flow across the plains and the Denver area for the next several days. This means a chance of showers, with much cooler temperatures through Wednesday. Our forecast models are showing some discrepancies in the position of the low, and how much precipitation we will receive.

The cool weather will be with us until Thursday, when temperatures will warm back up into the 60s and lower 70s. There will be a chance of showers through Wednesday, with drier condtions starting Thursday. The coming weekend looks like it will be a nice one, with mostly sunny skies, drier conditions and temperatures warming to near average both Saturday and Sunday.
